The Cook's Book, DK. This great tome was a wedding present and has been very useful for all those things you think you know, but can't quite remember. It covers the basics of sauces, breads, cakes, indian, soups, thai.. the list goes on.
The Fruit Book / The Vegetable Book, Jane Grigson. Wonderful, classic books for when you have a glut of fruit or veg and need inspiration.
The Kitchen Diaries, Nigel Slater. I could spend all day reading Nigel Slater's books. This is a great one, basically he notes what he cooks every day for a year. The Bramley Apple Shortcake is excellent - when I made it I forgot to put the pastry at the bottom so instead piled into all on top - great results, it went down very well!
The Usbourne First Cookbook. This was my first cookery book as a child, and the fact that is still going says a great deal. I love the illustrations of mini chefs too!
Vegetarian Kitchen, Sarah Brown. this very 80s style vegetarian cookbook may have dated photography but still has some good recipe ideas.
